Balloons at War: The Japanese Balloon Bombs of World War II (Main Library)

Saturday, December 16, 2023

2:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Near the end of World War II, the Japanese Imperial Army launched 9,000 hydrogen balloons armed with incendiary bombs. Carried across the Pacific by the strong westerly winds of the upper atmosphere, the balloons were designed to ignite wildfires in the western U.S. Several dozen landed in Washington State, including one in Everett and another that interrupted the power supply to reactors at Hanford. Ross Coen will discuss the Japanese balloon offensive, one of the more intriguing campaigns of the war.

Ross Coen is an instructor in the History Department at the University of Washington where he teaches courses on Washington state history, environmental history, U.S. citizenship, and polar exploration. He lives in Everett.
