"The Perfect Scout": Important Civil War memoir surfaces in Seattle attic

Sunday, March 17, 2019

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Stephen Murphy talks about his great-grandfather’s newly-surfaced memoir of gathering intelligence for Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman during the union army’s “March to the Sea.” Co-sponsored with the Puget Sound Civil War Roundtable.

Murphy's great grandfather George Quimby wrote the book in the early 1900’s while he was living in Bellingham, WA.  The manuscript was lost for decades, found in Murphy's Seattle home, and  published by University of Alabama Press. This is a dramatic first-person account by a great storyteller that is very different from other works about Sherman’s March.

The Perfect Scout tells stories about Quimby and his fellow scouts as they traveled behind enemy lines gathering intelligence, often in Rebel uniform.  The book is not only for Civil War enthusiasts, but also a great adventure tale. The many stories that Quimby recounts include a perilous canoe trip through enemy lines to deliver a dispatch to the blockading fleet and how he met his future wife.
