WiFi Access Troubleshooting Tips

Whenever you are making changes to network settings, be sure you can return your computer to the original settings in case they are needed to access another network. Save your settings and restart computer if necessary.
The Library is not able to provide technical assistance to you, and there is no guarantee that you will be able to make a wireless connection. If you need assistance, contact the manufacturer of your laptop or software. The Library is not responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings.

Information you may need to know about our wifi network:

• Wireless Network Name (SSID):...........................Library Guest
• Security Mode or Type (WEP, WPA, etc.):...........Disabled or None
• Encryption Type:..................................................Disabled or None
• IP or Network Settings:.........................................DHCP enabled or obtain an IP address automatically
• DNS:.....................................................................Obtain DNS address automatically

The following guidelines are generic and may not apply if your computer has a proprietary wifi management program.

Windows 7

1. From Control Panel, click on the "Network and Internet" applet.
2. In Network and Sharing Center, clicking on "Connect to a network" will bring up the wireless access points currently available around you.
3. Click on "Library Guest".

1. On windows 7, and on most Windows versions, the wireless bar is located at the right hand side of the system bar, close to the system clock.
2. If you click on the wireless bar, the currently available wireless window comes up.
3. At the bottom of this window clicking on "Open Network and Sharing Center" should bring you to the control panel network management utility
4. On the upper left corner, click on "Manage wireless networks". Clicking on that should bring you to the wireless network utility, click on Add
5. The "Manually connect to wireless wizard" will come up. click on Manually create a network profile.
6. Enter your settings accordingly, and if you wish to, check the "Start this connection automatically" click Next after entering your information. and that should setup the local profile for your wireless on your laptop.

Windows Vista

1. Click on the Start button and select " Connect To " from the menu to display the Connect to a network dialog box.
2. From the list of available networks double click on "Library Guest" to proceed to the next screen.
3. On the Connect to network screen, leave the Security key or passphrase box empty and click on the "Connect" button.
4. At the next screen, Vista will attempt to connect to your wireless router or access point. Once the connection is established, you will be prompted to save your connection by checking the Save this network and Start this connection automatically boxes.
5. Click Close. You will now be connected to the wireless network.

Windows XP

1. From Control Panel, select "Network and Dial-up Connections" or "Network and Internet Connections."
2. Right-click on "Wireless Network Connection" or "Local Area Connection" and click "Properties."
3. Locate the internet TCP/IP protocol and get into its Properties. If more than one TCP/IP protocol is listed, look for the one associated with your wireless adapter.
4. Select "Obtain and IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically."
5. XP, right-click on "Wireless Network Connection: and select "View Available Wireless Networks." Select the name of the wireless network available and click "Connect."
6. Note: If your computer has a proprietary WiFi management program (i.e. Intel Pro Set/Wireless) or if you are prompted to enter a device password, configure your software to Use Windows to Manage WiFi. Then connect to WiFi using steps 1-5.

Mac OSX

1. Select Apple Menu, then System Preference, then Network button.
2. Select TCP/IP tab and configure "Using DHCP."
